Falz, the Nigerian rapper and activist, has revealed why he uses his music to address societal issues.
The rapper is known for songs which are often targeted at addressing bad governance and societal ills. He was also one of the frontrunners of the 2020 #EndSARS protest.
During the WithChude Live event, Falz disclosed that people within his social circles often try to discourage him from being so vocal.
The 34-year-old artist, however, emphasised that his artistry is deeply influenced by his environment, making it impossible for him to stay silent.
“Like you said asides being warned to stay away… My friends in like social circles, they are always like ‘baba, what is your own?’. But at the end of the day, the kind of artiste that I am, I draw inspiration from my surroundings,” he said.
“This is what is happening around me, I have to talk about it. It is inevitable and for me, I feel passionate about these things that I speak about and a lot of times… Like I was talking about social circles and people trying to talk me down.
“A lot of times people tell me that these people you are fighting for, they will still fight you. I am like if I was thinking that I was fighting for somebody, I would not even doing it in the first place.

“For me, it is never even about that, this is just something I feel strongly about, something I do not agree with. Of course, I am going to talk about it. It is about compassion, humanity and that is it for me.”
Born Folarin Falana, Falz has established himself as a household name in Nigerian music since his career began in 2009.
He has also earned a plethora of awards and nominations for his craft.
In July 2024, the rapper revealed that Fela Kuti, Plantashun Boiz and Trybesmen influenced him to do socially conscious music.
