The Omu family has announced the passing of Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu (Rtd), a revered Nigerian military officer, statesman, and community leader. He died on April 29, 2025, at the age of 84.
A native of Igbide in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, General Omu’s life was marked by a legacy of distinguished service in the Nigerian Army and unwavering commitment to national development and his Isoko roots.
He served as Military Governor of the former South-Eastern State—now Cross River and Akwa Ibom States—between July 1975 and July 1978. During his tenure, he spearheaded significant infrastructural and policy reforms that laid a foundation for regional progress.
In 1985, he was appointed Commander of the Command and Staff College and served as a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, Nigeria’s highest decision-making body at the time.

General Omu also played a prominent role in Nigeria’s political transition. In 1994, he was appointed Chairman of the Constitutional Conference Commission, contributing to the constitutional groundwork that influenced the country’s return to democratic rule. His role in national politics was widely lauded for its thoughtfulness and patriotism.
His service continued in later years, including his appointment by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2009 as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

He is survived by his wife, Senator Chief (Mrs.) Stella Omu, six children, siblings, grandchildren, and a grateful nation that honours his memory.
The family stated that burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
