The Ekiti State Ministry of Justice has received an order from a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti to assume responsibility for the prosecution of 20-year-old Joy Ikoja, who is accused of injuring her lover Ibrahim Usman’s manhood.

The Ekiti State Police Command recently charged the mother of two in court for illegally wounding her partner by tearing his scrotal sac on April 12, 2025, in the Irona area of Ado-Ekiti.

Citing the current spate of violence against males, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ado-Ekiti Branch, expressed dissatisfaction with the prior allegation and wrote to the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice to take up the lady’s prosecution.

The branch stated that, in accordance with Section 241 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021, the defendant’s actions clearly amount to attempted murder, which carries a life sentence.

Federal High Court

The Attorney General of the State, Dayo Apata, SAN, has instructed F.O. Awoniyi, the deputy director of Public Prosecution, Ekiti State, to take over the case, he said during the court hearing. He requested that the original case file be moved to the Public Prosecution office for review.

He noted that the practice of violence against men is becoming rampant in the state and should not be encouraged, adding that the defendant was arraigned before the court two weeks ago for a similar offense but a passionate plea on the nominal complainant brought about withdrawal and settlement.

Counsel to the defendant, David Ogbede orally applied for the bail of the accused, urging the court not to be silent in the interest of justice.

In his ruling, Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola denied the bail application and granted the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice the order to prosecute the defendant, urging them to accelerate the case charge.

He adjourned the case to 12th May, 2025 for further heating
