The arrest of a suspect in relation to the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State has been verified by the state government.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency stated Thursday that it is closely collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure justice is delivered in the case that has caused public indignation, in a statement sent through its official X (formerly Twitter) profile.
“The disturbing incident of sexual abuse involving a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State has garnered significant public attention, which is understandable,” the DSVA said.
The Ayobo Police Station is now housing the accused offender, whose name has not yet been made public.
According to the agency, the case has been officially transferred to the Gender Desk Unit for further investigation.

“The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is actively involved in this case, and investigations are already underway in close collaboration with the Police Force. The case has been referred to the Gender Desk Unit and the alleged perpetrator is currently in custody at the Ayobo Police Station,” the agency confirmed.
The DSVA also said that the government is in direct contact with the survivor’s family and is providing full support, including medical care and psychological intervention.

“The survivor has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit (FSU) and Psychosocial Services (PSS) to ensure she receives comprehensive and immediate psychosocial support. Medical attention has also been provided,” the agency added.
In addition to thanking the public for raising the alert, the agency emphasised the need to be vigilant and take joint responsibility in addressing sexual assault in the state.

“We greatly value the public’s diligence in raising awareness of this issue, as community awareness is essential to protecting our children.”
The Lagos State Government reassured the public that it is still dedicated to safeguarding children and making sure those who perpetrate sexual assault face the full force of the law, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy.
“The Lagos State Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring that perpetrators are held fully accountable under the law and securing justice for survivors of sexual violence,” the agency said.
