President Bola Tinubu has flagged off the construction of a new Independent National Electoral Commission headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking on Tuesday at the flag off, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system and fostering a more robust democracy.
He said that the new building will be a “hub for innovation, planning, training, and transparency in electoral administration.”
Tinubu emphasised that as Nigeria’s democracy develops, the institutions that support and defend it must also expand in tandem.
He vowed his administration’s full support to ensure that INEC is adequately equipped, not only with infrastructure but also with the necessary legal frameworks, policies, and resources to effectively execute its constitutional mandate with courage and excellence.

The President particularly commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project, describing it as “another important step towards the protection of our democracy in this country.”
He lauded the Minister’s vision, courage, and commitment to national progress and development.
Tinubu also appreciated the INEC team and the leadership of the Federal Capital Territory Administration for their steadfast commitment.

He commended their bravery in facing difficulties and their work building a more solid basis for Nigeria’s democratic resilience.
Speaking to the supervisors, contractors, and other project participants, Tinubu gave a clear directive, emphasising the importance of their job.
“You are not just building an edifice; you are building trust in our nation,” Tinubu stated, underscoring the symbolic importance of the new headquarters. He urged them to allow “quality, speed, integrity, and transparency” to guide their efforts.
Tinubu further, reminded Nigerians that “democracy is not a destination but a journey.”
He called for collective efforts to strengthen institutions, safeguard freedoms, and protect the nation’s future.
