Rüdiger quits international football at 33.
German international Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football after 12 years with the German national team.
In his statement shared on his Instagram account, Rüdiger reflected on his journey with the team, which dates back to 2014, and thanked his teammates, the coaching staff and the fans for the years they shared together.
“After some time of reflection, I feel the time has come for me to end my career with the national team and make way for the younger generation.
When I first wore the Germany shirt in 2014, I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams that it would eventually lead to 86 international appearances.
Even though the major title eluded us at the last few tournaments and we had to endure some painful defeats, this period was an extremely special chapter for me — one that will stay with me forever.
A huge thank you goes to:
My teammates: For every battle we fought together and for the unity in the dressing room and at our training camps — and above all, for the friendships that will remain long after football.
The entire coaching and support staff: Thank you for the years of trust and the work behind the scenes. A special thank you goes to Jogi Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann, who accompanied and shaped me throughout my journey with the DFB. And also to my mentor in the youth national teams, Horst Hrubesch.
And of course, you fans: Thank you for your support — especially for the incredible atmosphere during our home European Championship in 2024.”
Rüdiger made his senior debut for Germany in 2014 and earned 86 caps, scoring three goals. He also won the FIFA Confederations Cup with the German national team in 2017.
