Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi celebrates his first goal for Coventry City, thanking God with a simple message: “God is Great” and quoting the Bible verse of “2 Timothy 1-12” on his Instagram account after Coventry City defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Awoniyi, making his first start for the club since completing his move from Nottingham Forest, wasted no time making an impact. The Nigerian striker opened the scoring early in the game before Jack Rudoni doubled Coventry’s advantage shortly after in which Awoniyi assisted.
Plymouth fought back after the break, scoring twice to bring the game on level at 2-2. However, Coventry regained control as substitute Ephron Mason-Clark restored their lead before Victor Torp converted a late penalty to seal a 4-2 victory.
The result sends Coventry City into the third round of the Carabao Cup, while Awoniyi’s goal and assist marked an impressive first start for his new club.
