Charlton Athletic FC has confirmed the invitation of its shot-stopper, Arthur Okonkwo, by the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, billed for September.
“Arthur Okonkwo has been named in the Nigeria squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.”
It is his first major invitation on a big stage, having been capped twice for Nigeria during their Unity Cup success at The Valley in the summer of 2026. Although England-born, Okonkwo had represented England at U-16, U-17 and U-18 levels, making 10 appearances in total across those age groups.
The Intercept Nigeria had previously reported the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifiers schedule as released by CAF. On Friday, September 25, the Super Eagles will host Madagascar at 5pm BST before travelling to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, for another 5pm BST kick-off.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper began his youth career with Arsenal and even rose to the senior team after being promoted. Unfortunately, he did not make any official appearances for Arsenal, except in friendly games.
After Arsenal, he moved on loan to Crewe Alexandra, where he stayed from 2022-23, before joining Sturm Graz on loan for the rest of 2023. Wrexham also signed him on loan before making his move permanent during the 2023-24 season.
He arrived at Charlton Athletic FC this summer from Wrexham on a season-long loan and has made four appearances for the Addicks.
