The English Premier League continued its matchday action with several big names in action as Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa all took centre stage.
Brighton & Hove Albion ran riot against Aston Villa, securing a convincing 4-0 victory at the Amex Stadium, while Manchester City came from behind to claim a narrow win over Bournemouth. Liverpool, meanwhile, salvaged a point against Newcastle United after scoring a late equaliser in stoppage time.
Manchester City 2–1 Bournemouth
Manchester City began their new Premier League campaign with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium.
Bournemouth stunned the home crowd in the 26th minute when Marcus Tavernier found the breakthrough to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. City struggled to turn their pressure into a goal as Bournemouth held firmly onto their advantage.
The hosts eventually found a way back in the 84th minute, with Marc Guéhi heading home the equaliser. City then completed the comeback deep into stoppage time when Joško Gvardiol scored in the 90+1st minute, with VAR confirming the goal after an initial offside decision. The late winner handed Manchester City a dramatic victory.
Brighton 4–0 Aston Villa
Aston Villa endured a disastrous opening game as Brighton & Hove Albion produced a dominant first-half display to claim a 4-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Victor Lindelöf inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. Maxim De Cuyper then doubled Brighton’s advantage in the 18th minute, leaving Villa facing an uphill battle.
The hosts continued their attacking onslaught, with Jack Hinshelwood finding the net twice in quick succession. His first goal came in the 30th minute before he struck again in the 31st minute to complete Brighton’s four-goal blitz.
Villa’s difficult afternoon was compounded when João Gomes was shown a red card before half-time, leaving Unai Emery’s side with 10 men. Brighton comfortably controlled the remainder of the game to secure a convincing opening-day victory.
Newcastle 2–2 Liverpool
Liverpool were forced to settle for a point after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Newcastle made a quick start, taking the lead in the 5th minute through Anthony Elanga, who finished a counter-attack to put the hosts ahead.
Liverpool responded after the break, with Cody Gakpo restoring parity in the 54th minute with a long-range effort. Newcastle regained the advantage just a minute later when Joe Willock struck in the 55th minute to make it 2-1.
Liverpool continued to push for an equaliser and were eventually rewarded deep into stoppage time. Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the 99th minute to rescue a point for the Reds.
