According to reports, Abubakar Yakubu, the recently elected president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), was detained after allegedly being involved in a tragic automobile accident in Surulere, Lagos.
In a hotly contested election, Yakubu defeated seasoned actress Rita Daniels 116 to 113, with three votes deemed invalid, to win the AGN leadership.
As the first Northern Nigerian to lead the Guild since its official registration in 1998—a role often occupied by Southern Nigerians—his appointment represents a significant turning point in the organisation’s history.
A pedestrian is said to have died in the Surulere incident, though specifics of the collision are still unknown.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding Yakubu’s arrest or the circumstances of the crash.

This came a few weeks after Emeka Rollas who claimed that Regina Daniels needs help, advised Rita to prioritise her daughter’s well-being rather than contesting the AGN elections.
Just last month, Actress Regina Daniels responded to drug abuse claims from the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, for saying she needs help.
Emeka Rollas, in a lengthy Instagram post on Thursday, told Rita Daniels to focus on her daughter Regina’s health instead of contesting the AGN presidency.
While calling out some Nollywood veterans for remaining silent over the ongoing messy breakup between Regina Daniels and her husband, Senator Ned Nwoko, Emeka Rollas said:
“Regarding Regina, we all know she needs help. Your silence is unfair.”
In response to the AGN president’s statement, Regina Daniels said:
“Respectfully, there must be something wrong with you, sir, to say I need help?”
Accusing Rollas of ingratitude and financial misconduct, Regina, in a post on her Instagram story, said: “I say you are a disgrace of a president who just visits one office to another, enriching his pocket under the guise of catering to the wellbeing of actors.
“Well, I’m not shocked because that is how you get paid—bringing women to my family home several times to take swimming lessons, which I warned you about—hence your bitterness,” she added.
