Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, also known as the Flamingos, have reached the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final at full time.
Since the start of the tournament, the Nigerian girls have shown resilience, losing just one game, their opening match against Poland. They have since gone on to win their remaining five matches to secure a place in the final.
The Flamingos finished second behind North Korea in their group to qualify for the knockout stage. They subsequently eliminated Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil to book their place in the final.
In tonight’s encounter, both teams put up a strong fight in the first half, but neither side could find the back of the net as the opening 45 minutes ended goalless.
Moreso, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Queen Joseph, whose brilliant strike sent the Green and White supporters into celebration. Sixteen-year-old Bashiru Awawu then took charge, scoring twice in the 71st and 80th minutes to extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-0.
Brazil managed to pull one back in the 89th minute, but it was not enough to stop the Flamingos from securing a 3-1 victory and a place in the final.
The Nigerian girls will now face Japan on November 7, 2026, as both sides battle for the U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
