Inter Lagos FC have announced that head coach Shakiru Giwa has stepped down following the club’s poor start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
Giwa becomes the first manager to part ways with an NPFL club this season.
The club announced the development on its social media platforms, expressing appreciation for the coach’s contributions and confirming the end of their working relationship.
In a statement, Inter Lagos FC said:
“Coach Giwa has been an important part of the club’s journey, most notably leading Inter Lagos FC to promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). This achievement represents a significant milestone in the club’s history and an important part of its growth.
The club expresses its sincere appreciation for his dedication, commitment and contribution to this historic achievement. His role in guiding Inter Lagos FC to the NPFL will remain a valued part of the club’s story.
As both parties move forward, Inter Lagos FC wishes Coach Giwa every success in his future coaching endeavours.
Thank you, Coach Giwa, for your service, your contribution and for being part of our journey.”
Giwa guided Inter Lagos to their first-ever promotion to the NPFL in 2026 but has struggled to reproduce that form in Nigeria’s top-flight division.
After eight league matches, the newly promoted side have managed just two points and conceded 11 goals, the highest tally in the league so far.
