Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League league-phase fixtures produced several impressive results, with Manchester United ending their 13 winless to pick up for first victory, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain running riot against Villarreal and Barcelona cruising past Aston Villa.
Villarreal 0–6 Paris Saint-Germain
Paris Saint-Germain delivered a ruthless attacking display, dismantling Villarreal 6-0 to maintain their winning start in the competition.
The French champions took complete control of the contest during a devastating opening spell, finding the net four times within the first 17 minutes. João Neves, Désiré Doué and Senny Mayulu were among those who punished Villarreal’s defensive struggles before Fabián Ruiz added another goal to cap PSG’s remarkable start.
PSG continued their dominance after the interval, with Ruiz completing his brace following an intelligent attacking move. Substitute David Boly then marked his Champions League debut with a goal, putting the finishing touch on an outstanding performance by the reigning champions.
Manchester United 3–2 Roma
Manchester United produced a remarkable turnaround at Old Trafford, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Roma 3-2 and bring their lengthy winless spell to an end.
Roma appeared firmly in control after Matías Soulé opened the scoring before Donyell Malen converted from the penalty spot to give the visitors a comfortable advantage at half-time.
However, United returned with renewed determination. Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit from the spot after being given another opportunity to take the penalty, while Bryan Mbeumo came agonisingly close to scoring, striking both goalposts.
The breakthrough finally arrived through Matheus Cunha, who found the net twice within four minutes to complete United’s comeback and secure all three points. His evening ended on a sour note, however, as he received a second yellow card during stoppage time.
Atlético Madrid 0–2 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich returned to winning ways with a convincing 2-0 victory over Atlético Madrid, courtesy of second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer.
After a closely contested opening period, Bayern broke the deadlock when Karl capitalised on a turnover inside Atlético’s penalty area, calmly lifting the ball over goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Laimer subsequently doubled the advantage with a powerful finish after receiving an excellent pass from Harry Kane, putting the result beyond the hosts.
Atlético attempted to find a way back into the contest, with Marcos Llorente and Giuliano Simeone both coming close to scoring. However, Manuel Neuer stood firm to preserve Bayern’s clean sheet and secure victory in his 164th Champions League appearance.
Barcelona 3–0 Aston Villa
Barcelona responded positively to their previous defeat against Paris Saint-Germain by securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.
The Spanish side made an early statement through Lamine Yamal, who intercepted an opposition pass before producing a fine curling finish in the seventh minute. The goal also saw the teenager set a new record as the youngest player to reach the milestone of Champions League goals.
Raphinha then took centre stage after the break, scoring twice to put the result beyond doubt. His first came through an effort that took a deflection before finding the net, while his second was the product of an excellent delivery from João Cancelo.
The defeat brought Aston Villa’s four-match winning streak in the Champions League to an end, while also ending their perfect start to this season’s campaign.
