The Super Eagles of Nigeria have begun their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a victory after a 2-1 win over stubborn Madagascar.
Super Eagles debutants George Ilenikhena and Usor Moses scored both goals that gave Nigeria the decisive victory.
First half
The game started with Nigeria taking more of the possession and looking more comfortable going forward, but the Super Eagles were surprisingly punished in the 15th minute when the visitors took the lead through an Ehsan Kari header.
Fortunately for Nigeria, after relentless pressure, the Super Eagles found the equaliser in the 45th minute through George Ilenikhena, who is making his debut today and making his presence felt in the absence of Victor Osimhen.
Nigeria dominated the first half, enjoying 63% possession compared to Madagascar’s 37%. The Super Eagles also had 14 shots to Madagascar’s 3, with 2 shots on target to 1, while creating 4 big chances compared to Madagascar’s 1.
Second half
The Super Eagles returned with more spirit and attacking threat, seeking to score more as the counter-pressing became dangerous. In the 61st minute, Eric Chelle decided to make two substitutions, with Akor Adams replaced by Simon Moses, who has now made his 100th cap, joining Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, Ahmed Musa and Alex Iwobi.
Usor Moses, who plays for LASK in Austria, came in for Samuel Chukwueze and scored Nigeria’s second goal just four minutes after he was introduced. Nigeria won the tie 2-1 at full time.
As expected, Nigeria controlled the game in the second half, lighting up Godswill Akpabio Stadium as they delivered to the expectations of the fans.
The Super Eagles will now turn all attention to Guinea-Bissau for Matchday Two on September 29, 2026, when they travel away.
