Nigeria’s D’Tigers suffered a narrow 82–79 defeat to South Sudan in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers on today.
The Group E encounter was played at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès in Radès, Tunisia, with South Sudan securing a three-point victory over Nigeria.
D’Tigers fought hard throughout the encounter but were unable to complete a comeback as South Sudan held on to claim the win.
The defeat comes after Nigeria opened the fourth qualifying window against Cameroon, with the team now turning its attention to its remaining fixtures in the second round.
Nigeria will next face Cape Verde on August 30, as the qualifiers continue in Radès.
D’Tigers will be looking to bounce back from the defeat and strengthen their position in the race for qualification for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Nigeria’s D’Tigers are still searching for another gold medal at the FIBA AfroBasket, more than a decade after their historic triumph in 2015.
The Nigerian men’s national basketball team made history in Tunisia in 2015, defeating African powerhouse Angola 74–65 in the final to claim their first-ever AfroBasket title.
