The English Premier League 2026/27 season officially starts today, with the defending champions beginning their title defence against newly promoted side Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium at 8pm Nigerian time.
Arsenal on Sunday whitewashed Manchester City to lift the Community Shield, with Arteta, who is currently the oldest manager at a club in the league, putting out a statement.
Conversely, the 3-0 defeat was Manchester City’s heaviest defeat to an English side since November 2024, when they suffered a 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. It is worth noting that it was the first game of the new era under Enzo Maresca, following the departure of the club’s greatest manager, Pep Guardiola.
Coventry City have improved their squad, signing nine players in this summer transfer window. They acquired Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka from Brentford in a deal worth €7m, after he spent last season on loan at the club. Taiwo Awoniyi joined from Nottingham Forest in a €10.5m deal and was unveiled days ago. Six other players, Sidiki Cherif, Caleb Yirenkyi, Gustavo Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Aurèle Amenda and Loum Tchaouna, also joined, making Coventry’s spending reach €142.7 million so far.
Key Players to Watch Out for the Sky Blues
One key player to watch out for is Matt Grimes. The midfielder was voted Coventry’s Player of the Season and made the 2025/26 English Championship Team of the Season.
Coventry City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who kept 17 clean sheets in the league and won the Golden Glove award last season in the Championship, will also be one to watch.
Injuries and Doubts
Although the Sky Blues could be without some of their key players, including Frank Onyeka, who will be assessed before the game, and Haji Wright, who scored the club’s most goals last season. Jack Rudoni is also a doubt, while Luke Woolfenden remains out.
In what many may anticipate to be a blockbuster, being the first game of the 2026/27 season might deliver on expectations.
Arsenal made some significant improvements in key areas of their squad, bringing in Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, Illan Meslier from Leeds United as a free agent and Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, running the Gunners’ total expenditure to €167.5m. Transfermarkt based reporting puts Bruno Guimarães at €87.5m.
Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa is expected to join Arsenal following an agreement on personal terms, according to multiple reports. Arsenal have agreed a £51m deal for the defender.
Players to Watch Out for Arsenal
Bukayo Saka, who scored the team’s most goals last season, and Three Lions teammate Declan Rice, who has been voted Arsenal’s Best Player in the past two seasons, are players to watch out for.
Possible Absentees
Although Arsenal will be without William Saliba, who is still sidelined after picking up a back injury in France’s World Cup semi-final tie against Spain, and Jurrien Timber, who suffered a groin injury towards the end of last season.
Bruno Guimaraes is also doubtful after picking up a minor right-thigh/leg issue during Arsenal’s victory over Manchester City to win the Community Shield.
The Intercept Sports Correspondent, Oladimeji Adeoye, makes his prediction for tonight’s game, asserting that Arsenal will triumph by a slim victory of 2-1 after regular time.
