Leicester City have been put up for sale by the Srivaddhanaprabha family, who bought the club in 2010 for around £35 million from Milan Mandarić. Just a few years later, Leicester secured promotion to the Premier League before going on to shock English football by winning the title in 2016, as per multiple reports.
At the time of their title triumph, Leicester’s entire squad had been bought for around £22m, but its value had soared, with the squad being valued at more than £200 million.
After the title winning campaign, Leicester struggled to keep hold of some of their key players, with the likes of N’Golo Kanté, Riyad Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater eventually leaving for other clubs. Despite losing several of their stars, Leicester remained competitive and continued to play in the Premier League for several more seasons.
At the end of the 2022-23 season, Leicester were relegated to the Championship. Two seasons later, they suffered another relegation to League One at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
The owners said their decision to sell comes as the King Power business faces economic challenges in Thailand. With Leicester now in League One, the club’s income from broadcasting rights, commercial deals and matchday revenue has also fallen significantly.
So, they said it’s no longer realistic to continue to fund an expensive football club amid the financial struggles.
Between 2023 and 2025, Leicester recorded losses of more than £180 million. The club also had around £103.6 million in bank loans, adding further pressure to its finances.
After 16 years of ownership, which included one of the greatest title wins in English football, the Srivaddhanaprabha family’s Leicester story could now be coming to an end.
