According to Sky Sports and Sky News, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American sports investment group that has owned the club since 2010, is set to sell a roughly 33% stake in the Reds to a consortium backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Sky News reports that FSG, Liverpool’s controlling shareholder since 2010, is preparing to announce the transaction as soon as this week.
The consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and, until recently, a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
According to Sky sports, the proposed deal could value Liverpool at around £4.4 billion ($6 billion), making it one of the biggest investment deals in football.
FSG bought Liverpool for around £300 million in 2010 and has overseen a significant increase in the club’s value since then.
The proposed transaction would be a minority investment, although the involvement of some of the world’s wealthiest individuals could fuel speculation about a possible full takeover in the future.
Bhatia, 46, is a British-Indian entrepreneur with an investment banking background. He currently manages AyBe Capital, a multi-asset investment firm with interests in technology, media, property, consumer retail and healthcare.
He is married to Vanisha Mittal Bhatia, the daughter of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.
Bezos, one of the world’s most prominent businessmen, founded Amazon in 1994. His other investments include aerospace company Blue Origin and Nash Holdings, the ownership vehicle for The Washington Post. This version keeps the news-reporting feel but makes the story cleaner, less repetitive and more natural.
