Manchester City midfielder Rodri has joined Barcelona after the Premier League club agreed to sell the Spanish midfielder to the Catalan giants.
Rodri agreed to a four-year contract with Barcelona, with the transfer package reportedly around €76.5 million, including €60 million as the fixed fee and the rest coming through performance-related add-ons. City had previously rejected lower offers before accepting Barcelona’s improved bid.
The 30-year-old arrived in Barcelona on Monday and underwent his medical on Tuesday, and is expected to be officially unveiled after the formalities are completed.
Rodri joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in July 2019 for a then club-record £62.8 million. During his seven-year spell at the Etihad, he made 298 appearances and won 12 major trophies, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
One of the defining moments of his City career came in the 2023 Champions League final, when Rodri scored the only goal against Inter Milan to give City their first Champions League title.
His time at City was also interrupted by a serious injury. In September 2024, Rodri suffered an ACL rupture during City’s 2–2 draw with Arsenal. He underwent surgery and was ruled out for the rest of the season. He eventually returned to action in May 2025 after around eight months on the sidelines.
Despite the injury setback, Rodri reached the highest individual level of the game. In October 2024, he won the Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Manchester City player to win the prestigious award. His performances for City and his role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph played a major part in his victory.
And in 2026, Rodri added another major achievement to his career. As captain of Spain, he helped La Roja win the FIFA World Cup, defeating Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the final. Rodri was also named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner, recognising him as the best player of the 2026 World Cup.
