South Africa’s 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign began with a 1-0 defeat to Tanzania, but the match also produced a memorable first in the tournament’s history.
Banyana Banyana’s Robyn Moodaly and Gabriela Salgado became the first known couple to feature together for the same national team in a WAFCON match, adding a unique milestone to the competition.
Moodaly was named in the starting lineup and played the opening 45 minutes before making way at halftime. Salgado was later introduced from the bench and featured for the final 20 minutes, ensuring both players took to the pitch in the same game for South Africa.
Although South Africa left the match without a point, Moodaly and Salgado’s shared appearance ensured the game will be remembered for more than just the result.
