Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche has been ruled out for the 2026/27 season following a serious right-knee injury he suffered during Getafe’s friendly game against Monaco on Thursday.
Uche was forced off on a stretcher after a bad challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa during Getafe’s 1-0 defeat.
After the game, Getafe’s initial assessment indicated that the Nigerian midfielder had suffered a knee contusion.
The club’s initial report read:
“Right knee contusion.”
“Uche was injured late in the 0-1 defeat to Monaco on August 6 after a challenge from Monaco’s Christian Mawissa. He was taken off on a stretcher, with the first assessment indicating a knee contusion, while further medical examinations were required.”
However, Spanish media outlet AS later reported that further examinations and an MRI revealed more serious damage to Uche’s right knee.
According to the Spanish report:
“Christantus Uche suffered a serious injury to his right knee in Getafe’s friendly against Monaco.”
The report added:
“The injury came after a hard challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa.”
While the initial assessment was a knee contusion, further examinations reportedly showed multiple ligament and meniscus tears.
AS further reported:

The Spanish outlet also reported that Uche will require surgery and is expected to miss the entire 2026/27 season.

The injury comes as a major setback for the 23-year-old Nigerian international, who had just returned to Getafe after spending the 2025/26 season on loan at English Premier League side Crystal Palace.
Uche joined Palace on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, but after the season ended, the conditions required for the move to become permanent were reportedly not met.
He subsequently returned to Getafe and was expected to play an important role for the Spanish club this season.
The latest reports now mean Uche faces a lengthy period on the sidelines as he begins his recovery from the serious knee injury.
