South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla Laura Seethal, popularly known as Tyla, has removed Lagos from the itinerary of her APOP World Tour following calls from some Nigerians for a boycott of her planned concert over xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
A review of the singer’s official tour schedule on Friday showed that the Lagos concert, initially scheduled for December 22, was no longer listed among the tour dates.
The updated schedule maintained her planned performances across Europe, North America and South Africa, but Nigeria was omitted from the list of destinations.
The announcement followed Tyla’s announcement that Lagos will be the lone Nigerian city on the tour, ahead of the concert series’ final legs in Johannesburg on January 9 and Cape Town on January 4. Nigerians’ responses to the announcement on social media were conflicting.
Some Nigerians demanded that the performance be cancelled, claiming that South African performers shouldn’t be invited to Nigeria given the ongoing reports of xenophobic crimes against Nigerians in South Africa. Others disagreed with the boycott, arguing that musicians shouldn’t be held responsible for political issues or individual acts.

VDM has requested that Tyla’s scheduled concert in Lagos be stopped immediately.
In a video released on his official Facebook page on Thursday, VDM, who bemoaned the ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, declared that the concert will not take place.
He claims that the South African singer will not be permitted to profit from Nigerians.
He said, “There will be no Tyla’s concert in Nigeria. It is not happening. This is a warning to the organisers and the show promoters bringing Tyla to Nigeria. That show is not happening.
“Not when Chidinma Adetshina is battling deportation in a South African court. Now you want to bring in Tyla and sell tickets so that Tyla will make money off Nigerians. The same Nigerians that South Africans hate so much.
“This is a warning to you, if you go ahead with that show, we will come to the venue, and we will bring the show down.”
