Bernardo Silva to succeed Ronaldo as Portugal captain
Real Madrid midfielder Bernardo Silva is set to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo as the next captain of the Portugal national team following Ronaldo’s retirement yesterday.
In an interview after announcing Portugal’s squad for their UEFA Nations League matches, Jorge Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo was not included in the list for the first time in 23 years, not due to injury but because of his retirement.
According to Jorge Jesus, on the next captain:
“In the national team, captains are selected based on the number of international appearances.”
“The player with the 𝐌𝐎𝐒𝐓 international appearances after Cristiano is Bernardo Silva.”
Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football yesterday following 23 years with A Seleção. The Al Nassr forward’s retirement is not expected to be imminent at club level, but it is understood that the 41-year-old decided to end his international career entirely following a fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League game in the last international break.
Ronaldo left the Portugal camp after the altercation and was suspended for his actions.
Portugal will face Denmark on November 14 and play Wales three days later. Portugal currently lead their group after recording four wins in four matches, with their qualification for the next round already guaranteed.
