The threat of cultism in the Nigerian music business has deeply alarmed rapper and vocalist Azeez Fashola, better known by his stage name Naira Marley.
Only a small number of Nigerian artists, including himself, have not yet joined a cult, according to Marley, who bemoaned the detrimental trend.
He ridiculed artists who joined cults in search of protection and power, pointing out that even those who persuaded them to do so still travel with police escorts for safety.
On his X handle, the rapper wrote, “We no reach 5 weh never join cult for this [music] industry. Person weh put u for cult self dey carry police escort up and down.”
Meanwhile, Naira Marley has previously debunked rumours that he is a cultist, claiming that he was once threatened by cultists for refusing to join.

In August, Naira Marley asked the Police to reopen the investigation into the death of Mohbad.
He stated this while recounting his side of the story about his alleged involvement in Mohbad’s death in a video broadcast via his YouTube channel on Tuesday.
While maintaining his innocence in the singer’s death, Naira Marley urged the police to re-arrest him, his associate Samsan Balogun, aka Samlarry, and all others accused of involvement in Mohbad’s death.
He demanded that a trustworthy officer be put in charge of the case this time.

“I came back to Nigeria to support the police because I can see fingers pointing our ways. So I had to come back so that they can actually have nothing to do with it and check whoever so that he can get justice,” he said.
“I was in Panti for two months. After I came out from Panti, I was fighting for my passport. They held my passport. I was like, it’s okay to question me [over Mohbad’s death], but there’s no reason to detain me. I haven’t seen him for over a year.
But it’s okay. There was a conspiracy and a gang-up to keep me there. As you can see, the group chat got leaked. They even mentioned the name of the officer in charge of the case in Panti. They were also talking about judge.
“If you ask me, I will tell the Police to arrest everybody again. Put an officer we can trust in charge,” he said.
Naira Marley also revealed that he has agreed with Mohbad’s lawyer to give his royalties to whichever member of his family the court chooses to be in charge of his estate.
Mohbad died under controversial circumstances on 12 September 2023. His former record label boss, Naira Marley, and Samlarry were fingered in his death.
