Mr. Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate, has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s economic management, claiming that he has fabricated statistics to conceal the nation’s worsening economic conditions.
In a statement released on Monday through X, Obi cited a remark made by Tinubu during the 2022 Delta State presidential campaign, in which the then-All Progressives Congress flagbearer allegedly made fun of Obi’s focus on numbers and facts.
“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other Presidential Candidate, he was ashamed to call his name, saying ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians,’” Obi recalled.

“Now two years into his 4-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world with millions of Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from,” he said.
Obi charged that the Tinubu administration was fabricating economic development by utilising “wrong statistics.”
To put a good gloss on our worsening economic and household situations, he said, “President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics, from wrong unemployment figures, wrong inflation figures, and now GDP debasing.”
Obi reiterated his long-held belief that “government is not a rock science, it’s not a gamble.” It necessitates sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion, as I have always stated.
