Owerri-based and NPFL club Kun Khalifat FC has shared a video showing its head coach bleeding heavily after he was allegedly attacked following their 1-1 draw against Doma United in Gombe on Saturday during Matchday 9 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The Intercept Nigeria sports journalist contacted the club by phone on Sunday afternoon to obtain an update on the incident. The Intercept Nigeria gathered that the head coach and assistant trainer coach were among those who sustained serious injuries during the attack.
The club further disclosed that its legal team had taken up the matter, adding that it had written to the organisers of the Nigeria Premier Football League to demand sanctions over the alleged ill-treatment of its officials and players in Bauchi.
In the video shared on Facebook, the club’s head coach was seen bleeding heavily. The footage was accompanied by the following caption:
“When we lose at home we lose in peace. But when ever we win away or pick a point against the home team our lives will be in the hands of God this is so so unacceptable again we can’t continue like this
NPFL Please protect our lives”
In the video, some team officials and players were also heard lamenting that their lives had been put at risk simply because they secured a point away from home. They questioned what might have happened had they won the match, while some insisted that they would never subject a visiting team to such treatment in Owerri.
Kun Khalifat took the lead in the second half at the Pantami Stadium, around the 55th minute, before the home side equalized three minutes later to ensure the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The result prevented Doma United from drawing level on points with second-placed Rivers United, who have 16 points and a game in hand. Meanwhile, Kun Khalifat remain 17th on the league table despite earning a point from the encounter.
As of the time of writing, the NPFL disciplinary committee had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
