Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have reached the semi-finals of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket after producing a commanding 75–45 victory over Cameroon in their quarter-final clash.
The emphatic victory was particularly significant for Nigeria, who had suffered a heartbreaking 75–74 overtime defeat to Cameroon during the group stage.
Cameroon had forced the game into overtime after regulation time ended 67–67 before eventually edging Nigeria by one point. The result gave Cameroon the advantage in their first meeting, but the Junior D’Tigress made sure there would be no repeat when the two sides met again in the knockout stage.
Nigeria began their campaign with a 54–50 victory over Tunisia before suffering the narrow defeat to Cameroon. The team responded strongly in their final group game, defeating Senegal 70–40 to finish the group stage with two victories from three matches and secure their place in the knockout rounds.
Cameroon, meanwhile, entered the quarter-final with a perfect 3–0 record after going unbeaten in Group C.
That made Nigeria’s eventual 30-point victory even more impressive.
Unlike their first encounter, which went down to the final moments and required overtime to separate both teams, Nigeria established control of the quarter-final and refused to allow Cameroon back into the contest.
The Junior D’Tigress were also far more effective at limiting Cameroon’s scoring opportunities, holding them to just 45 points after conceding 75 in their previous meeting.
The difference was particularly evident when compared with the group-stage encounter, where Cameroon dominated the boards and scored heavily inside the paint. Nigeria’s ability to prevent a repeat of that performance helped them turn what had previously been a one-point defeat into a comprehensive victory.
The 75–45 result was not only Nigeria’s biggest statement of the tournament so far but also a demonstration of their ability to respond after disappointment.
Having lost to Cameroon by a single point, Nigeria bounced back with a 30-point win over Senegal before returning to face Cameroon and winning by another 30 points.
The progression also underlines the team’s improvement as the tournament has developed. Rather than allowing the group-stage defeat to affect their confidence, the Junior D’Tigress used it as a learning experience and delivered when the stakes became higher.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the other relevant quarter-final fixture.
The next game will present another opportunity for the Junior D’Tigress to move one step closer to winning the continental title and securing a place at the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China.
For now, however, the focus remains on a remarkable turnaround against Cameroon.
A team that lost to the Central Africans by one point in overtime has now eliminated them from the competition with a 30-point victory.
