Former Chelsea and current Galatasaray midfielder, Lesley Ugochukwu, is closing in on a switch of international allegiance to Nigeria, according to Paris-based Nigerian journalist Ojora Babatunde.
“Lesley Ugochukwu is close to obtaining a Nigerian passport, sources indicate.
The move could be a huge step towards the midfielder becoming eligible to represent Nigeria internationally.”
Despite representing France at U21 level, Lesley remains eligible to play for Nigeria because he was born in France to Nigerian parents and is yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the French national team.
The 22-year-old is primarily a defensive midfielder (No. 6). Right-footed, he is known for breaking up opposition attacks, winning duels, shielding the back four and progressing the ball from deep. He can also operate as a central midfielder (No. 8), though his best position is at the base of midfield.
At 22, Lesley would add depth and quality to the Super Eagles midfield, providing competition and cover for captain Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and even Alex Iwobi.
If his passport process is completed before the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Lesley Ugochukwu could earn his first invitation to the Super Eagles camp.
Ugochukwu has featured for Rennes, Chelsea, Southampton, Burnley and Galatasaray, scoring five goals and providing three assists across all senior club competitions.
