Taiwo Awoniyi agrees to join Coventry City on permanent deal
Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has agreed to join newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City from Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Romano reported:
“Taiwo Awoniyi agrees to join Coventry City from Nottingham Forest.
Nigerian striker set to leave Forest and join Frank Lampard at Coventry City, medical tests underway at the club today.
The agreement has been completed on permanent deal.”
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from German Bundesliga side Union Berlin on June 25, 2022, after Forest won promotion to the Premier League. The club paid around £17.5 million for the Nigerian striker, making him Forest’s record signing at the time.
The forward made a strong start to life at the City Ground, scoring 10 Premier League goals in his first season as Forest successfully avoided relegation.
Awoniyi is set to leave Nottingham Forest after four years at the club. He has made 103 appearances for Forest across all competitions, scoring 23 goals.
His time at the club, however, was heavily affected by injuries, particularly towards the latter stages of his Forest career.
In May 2025, Awoniyi suffered a serious abdominal injury during Nottingham Forest’s Premier League match against Leicester City after colliding with the goalpost.
Although he initially continued playing, the injury was later discovered to be much more serious. He underwent emergency surgery and was placed in an induced coma while receiving treatment.
The incident was a frightening moment for the Nigerian striker and his family, with the severity of the injury raising serious concerns about his ability to continue playing football.
Awoniyi eventually recovered and returned to the pitch, making his comeback after months away from action.
