Famous Nigerian rapper Falz has recounted a court experience that made him finally dump his legal profession to pursue his music career.
Falz, who attended the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and studied law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom before being called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012, claimed that as his notoriety grew, juggling law and entertainment became more difficult.
The 35-year-old performer stated in a recent episode of the Behind The Story podcast that although it was feasible to combine the two careers, maintaining a strong music career and an active law career proved challenging.
The rapper described a courtroom incident that brought to light the difficulties of practising law while rising to prominence. He claims that at a court hearing, a judge once acknowledged him for his extracurricular activities.

“There was a day in court when I announced my appearance, and the judge asked, ‘Are you not the one doing something on the side?’” Falz recounted.
He explained that at the time, some lawyers already knew him as the son of renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, while others were beginning to recognise him through his growing presence in the entertainment industry.
Falz said the experience made him realise that his growing notoriety might interfere with court procedures and possibly undermine clients’ trust in his capacity to concentrate on their cases.
“Imagine becoming even more famous and showing up in court. It could create distractions and make some clients feel I would be too occupied with music and other engagements. It would have been difficult because my face is already out there,” he said.
Falz became well-known in the music business in 2011 after his debut track, Wahz Up Guy, was released. Since then, he has been one of Nigeria’s top performers.
