There have been rumours that former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is prepared to run for president in 2027.
After actions by the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, there has been conjecture on Jonathan’s potential return.
The Bayelsa-born politician’s close ally disclosed to Vanguard on Wednesday that Jonathan, a PDP member, had purportedly committed to run for president in 2027.
The source informed Vanguard that Jonathan had agreed to run and that the plot to conscript him into running on the PDP’s platform had advanced.
He added that the former president was going into the race to find ways of addressing Nigeria’s rising poverty, hardship and the general suffering that had gripped the citizenry since the All Progressives Congress, APC took over power in 2015.

Additionally, according to the source, Jonathan had already met behind closed doors with a number of influential political figures both inside and outside the PDP, especially in the north, to confer with them and solicit their support for the 2027 presidential campaign.
The politician claims that Jonathan met with General Ibrahim Babangida, retd., the former military ruler of Nigeria, last weekend at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, and informed him of his intention to run for a single term in 2027.
Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, however, acknowledged that the party had been working to reinstate Jonathan.
“Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in not re-electing Dr. Jonathan. They now acknowledge his achievements and are even apologising, pleading with him to return and rescue the country,” Abdullahi said.
