Thieves broke into Bruno Fernandes’ Cheshire home on Wednesday night while the Manchester United captain was in Italy for the Champions League clash with Como, according to the BBC.
The 32-year-old midfielder was with his teammates in Como on October 21 when the break-in happened. His family wasn’t at the house at the time. Police arrived within minutes, and the intruders were reportedly inside for less than five minutes.
Cheshire Police told the BBC that officers were sent after a caller reported seeing three unknown men in the back garden of a neighbouring property. Police confirmed a burglary took place at the address but would not say who lives there.
Detective Inspector David Jarvis of Macclesfield Proactive CID said the investigation is at an early stage, adding that police are determined to trace those responsible. The BBC also reported that Manchester United are supporting Fernandes after the incident.
Sadly, this isn’t unusual. Footballers’ homes in this part of England are often targeted while the players are away on match duty.
Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and his ex-girlfriend Maya Jama were hit in a similar burglary in January while he was away for a Champions League game against Galatasaray. Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez have also had their homes burgled in the same area.
