Chelsea suffered another setback in the Premier League on Matchday 5 after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday night at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The defeat leaves Chelsea with just seven points from their opening five league games, with the Blues sitting in seventh place. Brentford, meanwhile, moved up to third after maintaining their unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Blues looked the more threatening side during parts of the first half but could not turn their possession and attacking opportunities into goals. Pedro Neto tested Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher early on, while Chelsea also created chances through Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.

Brentford, however, became increasingly dangerous after the interval.

The breakthrough arrived around the hour mark when Jaidon Anthony headed home from close range following a corner, giving the hosts the lead after a much-improved start to the second half.

The Bees doubled their advantage when Kevin Schade broke forward and saw his effort saved by Emiliano Martinez. Igor Thiago reacted quickest to the rebound and fired the ball into the net to make it 2-0.

There was still time for Brentford to add a third. In stoppage time, Schade delivered the ball towards the far post, where substitute Fabio Carvalho finished from close range to complete a memorable night for the home side.

For Chelsea, it was another frustrating result under Xabi Alonso. The Blues had gone into the game averaging three goals per match in the league this season, but they failed to score for the first time in a Premier League game since April.

The result also extends Chelsea’s difficult defensive run, with the club now having gone 21 Premier League matches without keeping a clean sheet.
