Atlético Madrid have defeated rivals Real Madrid in the Madrid Derby during La Liga Matchday 7 at the Metropolitano in Madrid.
Diego Simeone’s side secured a 2-1 victory over 10-man Real Madrid, with all three goals coming in the second half after both teams played out a goalless first half.
The match remained goalless after the opening 45 minutes, but the game changed shortly after the restart when Dean Huijsen was sent off, leaving Real Madrid with 10 players.
Atlético Madrid took advantage of the numerical advantage as Alejandro Grimaldo converted from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute to put the home side ahead.
The Madrid side continued to put pressure on their rivals and doubled their advantage six minutes later, with Jonathan David finding the back of the net in the 59th minute to make it 2-0.
Atlético Madrid continued to dominate the statistics, recording over 60% possession and 18 total shots, more than twice the number managed by Real Madrid.
Real Madrid, despite being reduced to 10 men, continued to push for a way back into the game and eventually pulled one goal back when Antonio Rüdiger scored in the 89th minute.
However, the late goal was not enough for Real Madrid to complete a comeback as Atlético Madrid held on to secure all three points from the Madrid Derby.
The defeat sees Real Madrid remain on 15 points after seven league matches, while Atlético Madrid move to 16 points following their victory.
