Bayern Munich have confirmed that the coaching staff of head coach Vincent Kompany will take over his duties while he continues his recovery in hospital.
The Belgian coach collapsed during the team’s training session on Friday and was immediately rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, confirmed that Kompany’s health remains the club’s priority and that the coaching staff will take over his duties during his recovery.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
The club also provided a positive update, confirming that Kompany is stable but will remain in hospital for a few more days while doctors carry out further checks.
“The good news is he’s stable,” said board member for sport Max Eberl as he provided an update on Vincent Kompany’s health in Saturday’s press conference ahead of the match at SC Freiburg. The 40-year-old had to be taken to hospital after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserves training session on Friday. “He will spend a few more days in hospital until everything is checked over. It shows again how health is the most important thing in life – not football. So, all of us send our best well-wishes. We as FC Bayern stand together. The most important thing is that the cause is established and he gets fit again. He’ll only come back when he’s fit,” continued Eberl. We’ve summarised the main statements on Kompany’s condition from the press conference.
Eberl said Kompany was stable and receiving appropriate medical care, adding that further test results were needed to establish the cause of his collapse and determine his recovery period.
“The good news is he’s stable. I spoke with him last night, with his wife too. It wasn’t a nice moment for all of us, he collapsed on the pitch yesterday and will spend a few more days in hospital until everything is checked over. It shows again how health is the most important thing in life – not football. So, all of us send our best well-wishes. We as FC Bayern stand together. The most important thing is that the cause is established and he gets fit again, and can recover in peace. He’ll only come back when he’s fit. The tests have already yielded some results, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long it will take for him to recover. He’s in the best hands. The best thing we can do is support him emotionally with energy and love.”
Bayern said Vincent would not be rush for a return, noting that his recovery could take weeks rather than days.
“Vinnie will get all the time. We’re not going to start setting any timeframes. We need to find out what the issue is, and then it’s a question of what the recovery time will be. We’re not talking in terms of days, but weeks. We’re all clear on that. And we have such a fantastic coaching staff, led by Vinnie. But our success is down to an outstanding team behind the scenes. There’s absolutely no thought of changing anything. All the guys here are outstanding – and so, in the spirit of Vinnie, which everyone carries within them, we can all tackle the coming weeks.”
