Real Madrid has made an official statement calling for the stepping down of LaLiga president Javier Tebas after he repeatedly criticised the club and questioned its sporting strategy.
Real Madrid complained about refereeing inconsistencies during the Madrid Derby between the club and Atlético Madrid at Atlético Madrid’s stadium. Real Madrid asserted that the refereeing decisions had favoured Atlético Madrid, claiming their players enjoyed impunity, while Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen was sent off.
Los Blancos suffered a 2–1 defeat in the derby and has since been furious with the officiating, with the club questioning several decisions made by referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias during the match.
According to Diario AS, the CTA (Spain’s refereeing technical committee) today acknowledged significant errors, including that Lee Kang-in’s challenge on Valverde should have resulted in a red card.
Real Madrid felt La Liga President Tebas had crossed the line from defending LaLiga and its referees into directly attacking the club.
The club particularly objected to Tebas commenting on its sporting strategy and using his personal/social media platforms to criticise Real Madrid.
Real Madrid statement:
“Following the statements made by the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas Medrano, Real Madrid C.F. wishes to state the following:
Our club considers it intolerable that the president of LaLiga uses his institutional position to continue discrediting and attacking Real Madrid in the manner he does in each of his public interventions. It is deeply concerning that the person responsible for representing and protecting the interests of all LaLiga clubs continues to repeatedly obsess over Real Madrid, turning our club into the permanent target of his public attacks.
His latest intervention is particularly serious and incomprehensible, and unbecoming of a responsible administrator, because he made these comments while responding to an article by an independent journalist in a digital media outlet. Nevertheless, he chose to react against our club, even going as far as assessing our sporting strategy, which is completely misguided and irresponsible.
It is extremely surprising that the president of LaLiga dedicates his time and personal platforms to constantly attempting to publicly discredit Real Madrid, instead of using the responsibility of his position to help build confidence in the institutions that are supposed to guarantee the impartiality of the competition. In doing so, he continues to damage the image of our competition and Spanish football around the world.
In view of this inappropriate behaviour, which has continued over time, we believe that professional football in Spain urgently needs a leader capable of managing it and developing its full potential while fulfilling the fundamental duty of neutrality.
It needs someone who understands the nature of the position, because the president of LaLiga is not the owner of the competition, but rather an administrator serving the clubs that make up the league and have entrusted him with its leadership.
The clubs need someone who will serve this mission with honesty.”
