Enugu Rangers have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League following a 3-0 defeat to MC Alger in Algeria in the second preliminary round. The Flying Antelopes travelled to Algeria with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, but the defeat meant they lost 3-2 on aggregate.
MC Alger scored three second-half goals to overturn their first-leg deficit and win 3-2 on aggregate. Boukholda C. opened the scoring in the 58th minute before Bangoura M. doubled the lead in the 85th minute. MC Alger added a third goal in the 90+2 minute to complete the comeback, while Rangers missed a penalty in the 70th minute that could have changed the course of the match.
Enyimba won the CAF Champions League in 2004 after defeating Tunisia’s Étoile du Sahel on penalties following a 3-3 aggregate draw in the two-legged final. Since then, no Nigerian club has won the competition, leaving the country without another title for 22 years.
