Nigerian para-athlete Goodness Nwachukwu has been rewarded with a $10,000 performance bonus by the National Sports Commission (NSC) after producing a world record performance to win gold at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Nwachukwu delivered a commanding display in the Women’s F42–44/F61–64 Discus event, successfully defending her title with a world record throw to become Nigeria’s first athletics gold medallist of the Games.
Her victory marked another hgge milestone for Team Nigeria, further reinforcing the country’s growing reputation in para-athletics on the international stage.
Announcing the enhanced reward package for Team Nigeria medal winners, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the Commission increased the athletes’ bonuses to recognise their outstanding performances and inspire greater success.
“During a brief meeting with the Director General, we agreed to increase the athletes’ bonuses. Gold medal winners will now receive $10,000 in total, $5,000 as an instant cash reward and $5,000 paid directly into their account,” Dikko said.
He added:
“After meeting the team in Aberdeen, I decided to increase the instant cash reward to $5,000 as added motivation for all gold medal hopefuls.”
As a result of her gold medal-winning and world record performance, Nwachukwu qualified for the enhanced incentive package, receiving the full $10,000 reward in recognition of her historic achievement in Glasgow.
Nwachukwu’s triumph took Team Nigeria’s medal haul to 11 at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, comprising six gold, four silver and one bronze. Nigeria’s gold medallists are Esther Nworgu (Para Powerlifting), Folashade Oluwafemiayo (Para Powerlifting), Rilwan Idris (Weightlifting), Edidiong Umoafia (Weightlifting), Onome Omolola Didih (Weightlifting) and Goodness Nwachukwu (Para Athletics). The country’s silver medallists are Lucy Ejike, Ifeoma Nwosu, Bose Omolayo and Loveline Obiji, while Ibrahim Owolabi claimed the lone bronze medal.
