The English Football Association has thrown its full support behind Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel, his coaching staff and the entire England squad following their exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 2-1 semi-final defeat to defending champions Argentina.
England looked on course for a place in the final after taking a first-half lead, but Argentina staged a remarkable comeback in the second half to book their place in a second consecutive World Cup final.
Following the defeat, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham released a statement backing the team and its manager.
“We are all heartbroken. Everyone involved with the England team gave everything to try and reach the World Cup final. Thomas, the players and the staff have represented our country with pride, commitment and professionalism throughout this tournament. While tonight’s result hurts deeply, we remain proud of the team and grateful to the supporters who backed us every step of the way.”
The German was appointed England’s permanent head coach in October 2024, succeeding Gareth Southgate, who stepped down shortly after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Since taking charge, Tuchel has overseen 20 matches. The 2-1 defeat to Argentina was his first competitive loss as England manager. Overall, he has recorded 15 wins, two draws and three defeats, with his other two losses coming in international friendlies against Senegal and Japan.
England will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, where they will face France at Miami Stadium in Miami, Florida, on Saturday, 18 July 2026.
