Former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar Jr. has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 16-year career with Brazil.
The 34-year-old made the announcement shortly after Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a Round of 16 defeat to Norway.
Neymar confirmed his decision in a post-match interview following Santos’ 4-2 victory over Universidad Central in the Copa Sudamericana on July 29, 2026. Asked about his future with the Brazilian national team, he said:
“My time with the Brazilian national team has passed. It’s over. I believe I’ve made history there, and I’m very happy with everything I experienced. I lived through so many moments. I gave my blood, I gave my life, and I always fought for the yellow shirt. But I don’t think I want that anymore. My cycle with the national team has come to an end. Now it’s time for others to continue Brazil’s story.”
Neymar made his Brazil debut 16 years ago and went on to earn 130 caps, scoring a record 80 goals to become the Seleção’s all-time leading scorer.
At club level, Neymar leaves behind an equally glittering legacy. Across spells with Santos, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Al-Hilal, he made 636 appearances, scored 379 goals and provided 234 assists while winning 31 trophies, including the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, Copa Libertadores, La Liga, Ligue 1, Copa del Rey, Coupe de France and the Saudi Super Cup.
