Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) has appointed former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the Germany men’s national football team.

The 59-year-old signed a four-year contract at the DFB Campus in Frankfurt and will lead Die Mannschaft through UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Klopp officially succeeds Julian Nagelsmann on August 15, 2026, following Nagelsmann’s resignation on July 3 after Germany’s World Cup exit to Paraguay.

Widely regarded as one of football’s finest managers, Klopp began his coaching career at Mainz 05, where he guided the club to its first-ever Bundesliga promotion. He later transformed Borussia Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal and reaching the 2013 UEFA Champions League final.

His greatest success came at Liverpool, where he ended the club’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2020, having already won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2019. Klopp most recently worked as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull before accepting the Germany job.

The German Football Association also confirmed that Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and Sven Bender will join Klopp’s backroom staff.

Krawietz and Lijnders are long-time Klopp assistants, having worked alongside him at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, where they won the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

Lijnders, 43, most recently served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, while Krawietz, 54, joins from Red Bull after previously working with Klopp at Mainz, Dortmund and Liverpool.

Former Germany international Sven Bender, 37, returns to the DFB after coaching spells at Borussia Dortmund and Unterhaching. He also served as assistant coach of Germany’s U16 and U17 national teams between 2022 and 2024.

Speaking after his appointment, Klopp said:

“The national team can unite us Germans like almost nothing else. That is exactly what makes this role so special to me. I am grateful for everything I experienced and learned during the last year and a half at Red Bull, and for the openness that made this agreement possible. Now I look forward to this special task in German football. We will approach it with humility and patience, building a team that fights for one another, enjoys playing football, and is one the people of our country can fully support.”

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf described Klopp as the federation’s first choice following Nagelsmann’s departure.

“Jürgen Klopp represents passion, credibility and the ability to inspire people. He was our clear first choice, and we worked consistently to bring him in.”

Klopp’s first assignment will come during the September/October international window, with Germany scheduled to face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24, Greece in Augsburg on September 27, Serbia in Munich on October 1, and Greece again in Thessaloniki on October 4.

The four matches will mark the beginning of a new era as Klopp takes charge of the German national team for the first time.
